In the absence of sizeable representation from South Africa’s leading sires, buyers at the Johannesburg Ready To Run sale were fixated with imported 2yo’s.
Five youngsters broke the million Rand barrier, four of them purchased in Australia earlier this year. The fifth one was a Captain Al colt whose dam was imported from ‘Down Under’.
The R2 million top price was shared by a colt and a filly.
Mayfair Speculators secured a colt by former Australian champion sire Lonhro, Brian Burnard took the filly-honours with a daughter of Gr1 producing Myboycharlie (a grandson of Danehill). The youngsters had been bought for A$70k and A$30k respectively.
Next highest price of R1.7 million was a filly by worldclass sire More Than Ready out of an Irish-bred Gr2 winning staying mare (by High Chaparral) who finished fifth in the Investec Oaks. The filly had been an A$70k yearling.
Captain Al got the fourth highest priced lot, a colt out of an imported Australian Fantastic Light mare who won twice in South Africa. The colt had been a R1 million CTS Cape sale (book 3) purchase and found a new buyer here at R1.4 million.
The fifth 2yo millionaire was a High Chaparral colt, bought as a yearling for A$80k and changing hands here at R1.3m. His dam is a half sister to the 2015 Golden Slipper winner Vancouver.
The sale’s result improved on the inaugural 2014 CTS Ready to Run sale in Gauteng. The overall median reached 110k (up from 90k last year), colts at 140k (up from 110k), fillies at 90k (up from 70k last year). Sale graduates are eligible for the R2.5 million Ready To Run Cup in 2016.
