Strong interest in weanlings

Mare Sale

Mare Sale

The 2015 BSA Cape Mare & Weanling sale took place at Kleinplasie in Worcester on Thursday, 21 May 2015. Of the 273 lots catalogued, 175 were sold and with a slighty improved median price, the TBA’s Kevin Woolward expressed satisfaction with the results.

“Kleinplasie is a great venue from a location point of view as it’s a central point for all the studs,” said Kevin.  “The grounds are now being run by the municipality, so there were a few issues which we’ll have to take into consideration going forward.  However, overall we can only be happy with how things went.  The sale was very well supported.  In terms of the mares, it’s an opportunity for those that haven’t worked for one stud to try fresh surroundings and perhaps be exposed to different stallions at another, so most were just changing hands.  We were particularly encouraged by the weanling market though, and it’s something we’d like to expand.”

The aggregate was R8,743,000, up from R8,620,000 in 2014. The average was slightly lower at R49,960 and the median was R25,000, up on the 2014 figure of R22,000.

The highest price was R400k achieved by Lot 90, L’Amour by Gone West out of the Green Dancer mare, Midnight Air. Consigned by Wicklow Stud to dissolve a partnership, the 15 yo mare, currently in foal to Dynasty, went the way of Rennie Price.

The highest priced weanling was Lot 262, a Captain Al colt out of Jet Master matron, Scorched. Consigned by Danko Trust and Roaming Rock cc, the colt was knocked down to Hemel ‘n Aarde Stud for R340k.

The sale’s leading buyer was Rennie Price, who purchased 5 lots for a total of R930k. Drakenstein Stud were the leading vendors, consigning 20 lots for a total of R1,625,000.
