Million Lottery

KZN Yearling Sale 2014 preview

When last year’s lucky KZN-sale graduates come under starter’s orders on July-day for the Million Rand race, the tickets for the same lottery in 2015 will have been sold. That sale takes place on the two days prior to this year’s July, at Suncoast Casino.  Of course, it isn’t all about that one Million Rand race, as the connections of Louis The King will happily tell you. There are many other millions to be made from the KZN sale!

A cursory glance over the sales past graduates proves that this sale produces horses suited to all courses and distances and at serious value for money. A few of the best have even walked through unsold. Oldlands-bred 2012 SA Fillies Guineas winner Go Indigo passed through the ring unsold in 2010. Another to have an untroubled trip was this year’s Triple Crown winner Louis The King who, luckily for Geoff Woodruff, passed through the ring in 2012 without meeting his R55k reserve. Another to be overlooked in 2012 was Gr2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Virgo’s Babe, produced by Midlands Thoroughbreds.

The value is undeniable. Ace Antonius was knocked down for R40k (he won the Million race in 2013), Knock On Wood sold for R140k, Seal was deemed worth R210k and Happy Valentine went under the hammer for R240k . All that without the added Million race carrot.
