Billed as a “complete thoroughbred racehorse experience”, the 2014 Cape Summer Season kicked off with a bang with the inaugural running of an innovative four-day festival.
The initiative, which saw the 2014 CTS Ready To Run gallops and sale married with the traditional Cape Summer Season opener, the Gr3 Kuda Matchem Stakes, was further enhanced by the Lanzerac Hotel and Spa adding their sponsorship to the Gr3 Diana Stakes.
The Ready To Run gallops took place at Durbanville on Thursday, 2 October 2014, followed by viewings on Friday. Saturday, 4 October hosted an 8-race card at Durbanville’s country course, with Glen Kotzen’s Judpot filly, Double Whammy winning the Gr3 Diana Stakes with Greg Cheyne in the saddle. The Gr3 Matchem Stakes was won from pillar to post by Ashaawes gelding Reim, appropriately a graduate of the 2012 Cape Ready To Run sale, conditioned by Glen Puller and piloted home by son Chris. The day was rounded off with the jockey dash, extended to 150m this year and was again convincingly won by Aldo Domeyer.
With a brief pause to shout the Springboks to victory in the rugby, the first half of the CTS Ready To Run sale got underway at 7pm with 69 lots going through the ring. The scene was quickly set with lot 2, a Trippi colt consigned by Klawervlei Stud, going under the hammer to Geoff Woodruff for R1,5 million.
Lot no 20, a Warm White Night colt named Kemal Kavur also consigned by Klawervlei Stud, proved as impressive in the sale ring as he had on the gallops and was knocked down to Vaughan Marshall for R1,1 million.
The second session of the sale starts at 11:30 with Lot 76. There is a live stream available via the CTS website.
